Abstract

Fine grained yttria stabilised zirconia and zirconia-alumina composites are known to exhibit superplastic elongations to failure of more than about 500%. The microstructural aspects of superplastic deformation are described by examining the influence of alumina on the compressive creep behaviour of zirconia, and the role of grain size in the tensile creep behaviour of a zirconia-alumina composite.
