Abstract

This review of the application of biotechnology in integrated pest management was presented at a national symposium on recent advances in insect pest management, held in India in October 1992, and includes a table showing about 20 examples, under the headings: widening gene pool to enhance resistance to insect pests; improving selection efficiency for host plant resistance; and rapid survey of insect vectors for viral spread. Topics discussed in the text include embryo rescue and protoplast fusion; genetic engineering; deployment of engineered genes for pest resistance; gene tagging with molecular markers; quantitative trait loci for host plant resistance; and nucleic acid probes as diagnostic tools.
