Abstract

The interaction of two polarity sensitive probes ANS and TNS with organically modified silica nanoparticles containing vinyl and/or 3-amino propyl groups in aqueous media was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy, light scattering and zeta potential measurements. Our results demonstrate that the interaction between the probes and nanoparticles enhance significantly when 3-amino propyl groups are present indicating the presence of electrostatic interaction. A probe dependent quenching mechanism was also observed to be operative in the nanoparticle environment. Together with steady state, time resolved experiments suggest that for TNS quenching is primarily static in nature whereas for ANS the presence of dynamic quenching was observed.
