Abstract

Indian bread-wheat (Triticum aestivum Linn, emend. Fiori and Paol.) cultivar 'Kalyansona' was crossed with high-protein late-flowering winter wheat varieties 'Atlas 66', 'NapHal' and "Maharatta'. Their progenies along with induced mutants 'TW 1' and 'Rageni' and 2 selections 'Nebraska 5' and 'Nebraska 14' were evaluated for agronomic, protein, rheological and nutritional parameters. They showed differences in all the characteristics and in the relative amount of protein extracted in the major solubility fractions. Electrophoresis showed variation in specific protein and polypeptide bands of the gliandins and the glutenins. The results indicate the possibility of transferring genes from high-grain-protein stocks to high-yielding spring types. The genes responsible for the high-grain-protein phenotype seemed to be different in different high-grain-protein stocks.
