Abstract

The stabilized space-time finite element formulation of incompressible flows is used to compute the unsteady flow past an oscillating cylinder for two cases. In the first case the cylinder is oscillating horizontally with a prescribed motion. In the second case it is oscillating vertically with an unknown motion which needs to be determined as part of the solution. In both cases an efficient iteration technique is employed to solve the equation system resulting from the space-time finite element discretization of the problem. The results obtained are in good agreement with experimental observations.
