Abstract

Thermodynamic and kinetic factors governing glass forming ability of Zr--Ni alloy melts have been examined and the theoretical relative glass forming ability in Zr rich Zr-Ni alloys compared with the experimentally observed glass forming behaviour. Crystallization in Zr-Ni and Zr-Fe amorphous alloys has been studied by DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) and TEM (transmission electron microscopy). Instances of primary and polymorphic crystallization have been observed. Nucleation and growth kinetics of crystals, the overall crystallization kinetics and thermodynamics of crystallization have been examined.
