Abstract

This paper reports the results of the experiments to grow large crystals in amorphous alloy tapes are reported. The essential requirement for crystal growth is the progressive movement of the crystal/amorphous matrix interface, without the interference of fresh nucleation ahead of the advancing crystal growth front. Crystal growth experiments have been performed by sweeping the Zr--33 at.% Ni amorphous alloy tape by an electron beam. In contrast to the formation of sub-micron size crystals in the bulk crystallization process, electron beam heating has been found to produce large crystals of Zr2 Ni phase.
