Abstract

Different modes of crystal growth from amorphous phases are discussed, taking illustrative examples from crystallization studies on Zr sub 67 Ni sub 33 and Fe sub 67 Co sub 18 Si sub 1 B sub 14 metallic glasses. The progress of crystallization has been studied by means of DSC (differental scanning calorinety) and TEM (transmission electron microscopy). Crystallization in the alloy Zr sub 67 Ni sub 33 has been found to be polymorphic, which results in the formation of Zr sub 2 Ni crystals. Devitrification of Fe sub 67 Co sub 18 Si sub 1 B sub 14 has been found to occur in two step: primary crystallization of alpha -(Fe, Co) crystals, followed by polymorphic crystallization of (Fe, Co) sub 3 (Si, B). 7 ref.--AA.
