Abstract

This paper analyzes one of very simple mechanical systems which shows rich dynamical behavior. The "mass on belt system" falls in the category of hybrid system or switching system. The switching behavior is brought in by the play of dry friction originating between the surface of mass and the belt. The mass can either be in a stick mode or a slip mode and this creates a switching type system. The phase-space trajectory and the bifurcation diagram have been plotted and the results are explained in the light of the existing theory. Bifurcations due to border collision have been discussed in detail.
