Abstract

Crystallographic properties of solid solutions with stoichiometric composition Ax2+B1-x2+Xy2-Y1-y2- where A, B = Mn, Co, Ni, etc. and X, Y = Se and Te have been reported. Electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements of the system MnSe? MnTe in the temperature range 80-340°K have also been presented. MnSeyTe1-y samples with NiAs symmetry exhibited metal → semiconductor transition at Neel temperature (TN) while the cubic phases behaved differently. These compounds were found to be antiferromagnetic and the Neel temperature increased gradually with polarizability of the anions in going from MnSe to MnTe. The exchange constant for the cubic phases and the degree of ionicity were calculated and discussed in the light of the existing theories.
