Abstract

Retardation of the evaporation of water by monolayers of octadecyl alcohol, and of the compounds formed by condensing 1, 2 and 3 ethylene oxide molecules with octadecyl alcohol and of a few typical mixtures of these was investigated in the temperature range of 20°-40°. A very good retardation was obtained with the monoethylene oxide condensation product, while the triethylene oxide product was much inferior. Mixed monolayers, even those containing the latter, gave good retardation.
