Abstract

From an infra-red spectral study of m-amino benzoic acid, its hydrochloride and potassium salt and their deuterated analogues, it is established that m-amino benzoic acid exists in the dipolar form (m-NH3+C6H4COO-) in the solid state. In contrast to this, in dioxan and chloroform solutions it has largely a non-dipolar structure (m-NH2C6H4COOH). Probable assignments for the various observed bands in the spectra of the above six compounds have also been made.
