The circular dichroism (c.d.) spectra corresponding to 7F05D1.2 and 7F15D0,1,2 transitions of the europium oxydiacetate crystal are reported. The electric dipole and magnetic dipole contributions to the total transition moment are separated for the principally magnetic dipole allowed 7F05D1 transition as well as for the principally electric dipole allowed 7F05D2 transition. C.d. spectroscopy is shown to be a particularly sensitive technique for observing 7F15D1, 5D2 transitions. A calculation correlating c.d. spectra and structure, the first of its kind for lanthanide complexes, is attempted with the Judd-Ofelt model as basis.
