Abstract

Data obtained from the characterization of 49 sucrose negative V. parahaemolyticus -like organisms isolated from aquatic environs of Porto Novo and from 18 reference cultures of marine vibrios obtained from various parts of the world were analysed with the aid of a computer. Nine distinct phena emerged in this study. Luminous and non-luminous trains of V. harveyi clustered in phenon II and showed a high intergroup similarity (84%) with the V. parahaemolyticus phenon. Strains comprising phena III and IV proved to be V. cholerae (non 01) when the data of this study were compared with a previous work using a computer assisted identification programme. The other phena in which Porto Novo strains clustered were identified as Photobacterium fischeri (phenon V) and V. nigrapulchrituda (phenon VI).
