Abstract

Metallic sodium has been found to be an effective reagent for the transformation of o-aroloxyacetoarones into the corresponding o-hydroxydiaroylmethanes, which can be readily cyclised to the corresponding chromones. The synthesis of a number of 2-naphthylbenzochromes, the naphthalene analogues of the flavones, is described.
