Abstract

A great deal of uncertainty exists concerning the distribution of the vertical eddy diffusion coefficient of the middle atmosphere. A new technique has been developed in this laboratory in which chemical clouds are released in the middle atmosphere from a balloon platform. The expansion of the cloud is monitored by ground photography, from which the value of the eddy diffusion coefficient is calculated. The experiment was successfully tested on 9 March 1985 at Hyderabad (17.5°N, 78.6°E), India. The value of the coefficient was found to be of the order of 104 cm2 s−1 in the altitude range 10-20 km.
