Abstract

A simple model is proposed to reproduce the features of the stratospheric ion composition and density revealed by recent measurements. Where reaction rates are not known, they have been substituted by a lumped parameter which is adjusted to conform to such stratospheric characteristics as the loss of ions by recombination between positive and negative ions. Acetonitrile is shown to play a significant role in stratospheric ion chemistry.
