Abstract

The absorption of phosphine in an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid and formaldehyde was found to be kinetically controlled in the range of variables studied. The reaction was found to be first order with respect to phosphine and formaldehyde and approximately half-order with respect to hydrochloric acid. The reaction rate constants calculated were 2·34 × 102, 5·88 × 102, 1·84 × 103, and 4·98 × 103 [cm3/gmole]1·5/sec at 4, 13, 27 and 40°C respectively and the activation energy 14740 cal/gmole.
