Abstract

We develop a quantum theory for a partially polarizing optical element. We obtain an explicit relation between the Ρ-function of the output field in terms of the Ρ-function of the input field. We show the key role played by the nonunitary SU (1,1) transformations and point out the distinction between the quantum statistics of the output of a partially polarizing device and a squeezing device though both involve SU (1,1) transformations.
