Abstract

We consider a ladder system in which the two excited levels are coupled by a coherent drive. We show that this coupling can lead to gain regions for the laser transition even if the incoherent pumping of the middle level is such that there is no population inversion. We analyse in detail the origin of gain in such a ladder system.
