Abstract

A novel catalyst consisting of encapsulated HRh(CO)((PPh3)3 in NaY zeolite was synthesized and characterized using ICP, FTIR, powder XRD, SEM and TEM. Its application to hydroformylation of olefins (e.g., styrene and 1-hexene) has been demonstrated for the first time. The hydroformylation of styrene and 1-hexene using encapsulated HRh(CO)((PPh3)3 catalyst was studied at 373 K and 4.08 MPa pressure (CO: H2=1:1) in a stirred slurry reactor. For both styrene and 1-hexene, a conversion greater than 95% and n/iso ratios of 2:3 and 3:2 respectively were observed. The encapsulated Rh complex catalyst reported here was recycled several times and showed no leaching of Rh during the reaction. This catalyst showed lower activity when compared with that of the homogeneous catalyst, but has the advantage of easy separation and recycles.
