Abstract

The kinetics of the homogeneous hydrogenation of cyclohexene using RuCl2(PPh3)3 as a catalyst in benzene-ethanol (1:1) has been studied. The effect of the catalyst, cyclohexene and hydrogen concentrations and temperature on the reaction rate have been investigated. The influence of added triphenylphosphine and triethylamine has also been investigated. The effect of the catalyst concentration on the reaction rate is complex, the plot of the rate versus catalyst concentration passing through a maximum. This was found to be mainly due to the dimerization of the catalytic species at higher concentration. Based on the observed initial rate data a rate expression has been proposed. The activation energy was found to be 11.97 kcal mol-1.
