Abstract

Energy distributions of N2+ and O2+ ions emerging from an injected ion drift tube in helium buffer gas have been measured using the potential retarding technique and a computer-controlled data acquisition system. The high-energy tail of the distributions has a Maxwellian form and there is semi-quantitative correlation between experiment and Wannier's theory.
