Abstract

Heats of solution of several protonic acids and bases in ethanol have been measured and the following order of their relative strengths is inferred: HSO3F > H2S2O7 > H2SO4 > HCOOH and sodium ethoxide > potassium ethoxide > piperidine > n-butylamine > benzylamine > morpholine > α-picoline > pyridine > quinoline. Major enthalpy change in the neutralization reactions is attributed to the combination of ethoxonium and ethoxy ions resulting in the formation of ethanol.
