Abstract

Oxide glass powders of a wide range of compositions darken when heated at 400-600°C with a trace amount of water; excess water inhibits the darkening. The darkened samples bleach when heated to 850° under ordinary atm or when treated with oxidizing agents. A model ascribes darkening to formation of nonparamagnetic color centers formed by simultaneous dehydration and reduction reactions.
