Abstract

Reactions of natural zircon with Na2 CO3 in mole ratios from 1:1 to 1:2.6 at 800 and 900 °C for periods up to 48 h were studied. Na2 ZrSiO5 was formed initially. This reacted with an excess Na2 CO3 forming Na2 ZrO3 and Na2 SiO3. When treated with water, Na2 ZrSiO5 was unaffected while Na2 ZrO3 was converted into amorphous hydrated zirconia.
