Abstract

A study of the kinetics of the carbonylation of ethanol using Rh complex catalyst and HI as a promoter is reported. The effect of catalyst, HI, ethanol and propionic acid (a product) concentrations and the partial pressure of CO on the rate of carbonylation has been examined over a temperature range of 443 - 503 K. The overall carbonylation was found to be of reaction order zero, 0.824, 0.828 and 0.664 with respect to dissolved CO, catalyst, HI and ethanol concentrations respectively. A rate equation has been proposed and an activation energy of 17.77 kcal/mol was obtained.
