Abstract

The little-known fact that a biaxial crystal with a tensor permittivity εij as well as a tensor permeability μij can have a single refracted extraordinary ray for arbitrary angles of incidence on arbitrary cuts of the crystal, provided it satisfies the material condition ε11 = ε22 = ε33, is demonstrated from first principles and the consequences are examined in some detail.
