Abstract

Number densities of N2, O2 and O, reported from various mass spectrometer and EUV extinction measurements are re-examined for an altitude of 150 km. The number densities of N2 do not show any significant day to night change. The summer and equinox values of N2, on the average, are about 30% higher than the winter values. The O2 number densities, however, do not show any significant diurnal and seasonal change. The number densities of atomic oxygen obtained at 400 km from the incoherent-scatter measurements, are extrapolated down to 150 km by using the observed temperature profiles. The average daytime value is found to be close to the CIRA 1965 model value, but smaller than the figure suggested by von Zahn and used in the Jacchia 1971 model.
