Abstract

A complex translocation monosomic lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) plant was isolated for the first time from the F2 progeny of a cross between two translocation homozygotes, involving different chromosomes. Among the progeny of this monosomic (2n=2x-1=13) plant, monosomic plants were not found (presumably due to lack of transmission of deficient spores), but two trisomic (2n=2x+1=15) plants carrying interchange heterozygosity were isolated. Results of a study of meiosis showing presence of multivalents in these plants suggested that the monosomic plant had multiple interchanges, and probably five of the seven non-homologous chromosomes were involved in these interchanges. Among the two trisomic plants, one was normal in appearance but the other had some morphological deviations (compact branching, narrow leaves and dwarf nature) associated with the presence of the extra chromosome. The presence of multivalents in these trisomic plants suggested that these trisomics were also interchange types, involving a number of non-homologous chromosomes.
