Abstract

Ba---M hexaferrites with compositions BaO · (6 - x)Fe2O3 · xBi2O3 have been prepared with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4. The lattice parameter does not show any appreciable change as a function of Bi2O3 content. The saturation magnetization shows a maximum at a value of x = 0.15, whereas the coercivity shows a minimum at around the same value of x. The trend of the results is explained by invoking the presence of Bi5+ ions which give rise to Fe2+ species within the crystallites. These materials exhibit rather high values of dielectric constant; this is explained on the basis of an overlapping large polaron tunnelling mechanism.
