Abstract

The T-Phase of seismograms of coastal observatories consists of short period waves (period < 1 s) propagating with the velocity of sound in the oceans. It is believed that the T-waves propagate through the sound channel of the oceans. In this paper, the propagation of waves in an inviscid ocean with a sound channel in which the variable sound velocity has been harmonic analysed, the first two harmonics being retained only for simplicity, with a uniform bottom, has been discussed. It has been shown that waves propagating through the sound channel similar to the T-waves can only propagate through long distances, substantiating the hypothesis that the T-waves propagate through the sound channel.
