Abstract

The influence of rolling on the microstructureand the grain-refining efficiency of Al-5Ti master alloy that has been prepared by addition of Ti sponge to molten Al has been studied in detail. Rolling of Al-5Ti masteralloy has resulted in significant refinement in TiAl3 particle size and change in its morphology from plate like to blocky type. The mean particle size of TiAl3 has decreased with increase in the rolling reduction levels. The grain refining performance of the master alloy has improved with increase in the rolling reduction levels. These changes are attributed to the fracture of TiAl3particles during rolling, which results in an increase in the number of nucleating sites for Al.
