Abstract

The tree population structure of Kumaun Himalayan forests was analysed through density-diameter relationships. The density-diameter distribution curve for all species in the entire region shows an overall convex appearance (largely second derivative negative). Such a structure reflects predominantly an early succesisonal forest. Management practices have promoted this form of forest over large areas, at the expense of multistratal diverse forests. A marked paucity of old-growth forest is evident. A continuation of the current management and biotic conditions will lead to further replacement of the potential natural vegetation of oaks by successional species such as pine.
