Abstract

A model for the formation of braids, kinks and filaments in Saturn's rings is presented. They are shown to be a consequence of the electromagnetic equilibrium of moving charged grains, where the electrostatic pressure on the grain is balanced by the "pinch pressure" due to the dust ring current. On the basis of stability considerations it is further argued that the formation of equilibria with braids and filaments may be a dynamic process critically dependent on local plasma conditions prevailing in the ring.
