Abstract

The selective dissolution of an active sulphide mineral in galvanic contact with a nobler sulphide mineral has been compared with that under a desired applied potential. Selective dissolution of Zn from a chalcopyrite-sphalerite concentrate mixture was found to be better when leaching was carried out under an applied potential (-0.4 V vs. SCE). Also, selective dissolution can be controlled by varying the duration of leaching, pulp density, acid concentration and the sphalerite to chalcopyrite ratio. Models to explain the role of galvanic interaction, oxidative and non-oxidative dissolution in mixed sulphides have been presented.
