Abstract

Variation of electrical resistivity ρ and interplanar spacings with pressure of decagonal (D) Al82Fe18 is reported. A stepped response in ρ is observed in the range 57-70 kbar. The effect of pressure on the crystalline (C) Al82Fe18 is remarkably similar. The reversible change of ρ with pressure rules out a metastable D to a stable C phase transition and supports an electronic transition. This is corroborated by a reversible collapse of the interplanar spacings at ~57 kbar as evidenced by x-ray diffraction results.
