Abstract

A detailed determination of upper and lower critical solution temperatures (Ts) for the mixture 3-methylpyridine, water and heavy water is presented. The curvature of the line that connects these critical points is quadratic. It is given by |TS-TD|=B1|X-XD|B2 where X=weight fraction of heavywater in (water+heavy water); TD and XD are the coordinates of the double critical point. The exponent B2=0.51± 0.004 is in accordance with the expectation of a parabolic nature. The symmetry of the curve about TD is also studied.
