Abstract

The specific heat of variously strained and annealed gadolinium is determined between 200 and 400 K, using a precision calorimeter. A model based on the strain fields of dislocations and their effect on the magnetic ordering is presented. It accounts for the shift and the spreading of the specific heat near the Curie temperature. Possible further tests of the model are also indicated.
