Abstract
It is shown that the dissipation of energy by gravitational radiation induces (in the manner of viscosity) a secular instability of the Maclaurin spheroid at the point of bifurcation where the Jacobian sequence branches off. But the mode of oscilation that is made unstable by radiation reaction is not the same one that is made unstable by viscosity.
