Abstract

A one dimensional (1-D) model is presented for the investigation of the time evolution of enhanced reverse shear (ERS) confinement modes observed in recent tokamak experiments. The cases of frozen and evolving magnetic shear are studied and effects due to pressure gradient driven bootstrap currents are incorporated. The formation and evolution of transition fronts as a result of the bifurcation in the core solution has been investigated in detail.
