The double ionisation of CH4 was measured to be 38.97+or-0.25 eV by means of energy loss spectroscopy of single-electron loss products of 3 keV collisions between CH4+ and H2, CH4, Kr and air. The lower limit for the lifetime of CH42+ was determined to be 3.3+or-0.17 mu s.
