Abstract

The shape and the fine structure of the copper K discontinuity have been studied in the spinels CuCr2X4 (X=O, S, Se, Te), using a Cauchois type 40 cm bent crystal X-ray spectrograph. The shape of the discontinuity is discussed on the basis of the qualitative band structure and the molecular orbital theory. The extended fine structure is interpreted with the help of Lytle's theory which enables one to determine the interatomic distances (Cu-X) in the spinels. It has been found that these values obtained from the fine structure agree very well with the values known from the crystallographic data.
