Abstract

The erosion behaviour of two grinding media materials is reported. It is contended that high strain rate induced plastic instability phenomenon controls the erosion rate. Under normal incidence hyper steel is shown to exhibit extensive localized deformation and a lower rate of erosion than high chrome cast iron, which undergoes fracture while registering high erosion rates. For erosion of ball surfaces the low angle erosion dominates and high strain rate induced instability makes hyper steel more prone to abrasion than high chrome cast iron.
