Abstract

Long crack fatigue threshold (A Kth) and crack closure behaviour of two thermomechanically processed microalloyed (MA) ferrite-pearlite steels are reported. A Kth and crack closure were measured using a dynamic compliance measurement technique. Crack closure was observed at low load ratios (R < 0.5) and the fatigue thresholds decreased with increasing load ratio. In both steels, the closure-free intrinsic threshold (A Keffth) was found to be independent of the load ratio.
