Abstract

We have studied the electronic and vibrational photoexcitations in high quality polycrystalline BaBiO3 by the photomodulation spectroscopy technique in a broad spectral range (50-20 000 cm-1) and time interval (10-6 s to 100 s). We have identified two distinct photogenerated gap states with below gap electronic transitions and associated bleaching of i.r.-active vibrations. We interpret these spectral features as evidence of photogenerated polarons and bipolarons and explain their distinct generation processes and recombination kinetics. The photobleaching of i.r.-active vibrations is explained as due to suppression of the 3-D charge-density-waves.
