Abstract

An electron microscopic investigation on the orientation relationships between grains having hydrides in their boundaries has been carried out on Zircaloy-2. Apart from the basal plane, all other habit planes recorded by other workers were found to operate for the precipitation of zirconium hydride. For adjacent grains which were only mutually "rotated" (having the same normal in the direction of the electron beam), the same habit plane was found to operate for precipitation in both the grains. No hydride precipitates were observed on twin boundaries. Possible technical implications of the relationship between hydride orientation and texture are discussed.
