Abstract

Mössbauer measurements have been carried out in the glass system x Na2O⋅6 Fe2O3⋅(94-x) B2O3 (mole percent) with x varying between 10 and 35 to study the boron anomaly. A sharp decrease of isomer shift has been observed in the composition range between 20 and 25 mole% Na2O. A possible explanation is given on the basis of the existence of nonbridging oxygen atoms in glasses containing alkali ions beyond the above concentration.
