Abstract

We report the valence-band and Co 2p photoemission spectra of LaCoO3 obtained at different temperatures (100, 300, and 573 K). Analysis of the core-level spectrum in terms of a configuration interaction model suggests that both low- and high-spin states coexist at the low temperature (100 K). It also indicates that there is a decrease in the low-spin contribution at 573 K related to local structural changes. Photoemission spectra of the valence-band region further support this interpretation.
