Abstract

Closed form analytical expressions for the static strains caused by an arbitrary shear dislocation or an exposive source at any point of a uniform elastic half-space are first obtained. The correspondence principle of viscoelasticity is then used to calculate the quasi-static strains when the medium is linear viscoelastic. The particular cases of a Maxwell material, a Kelvin material and a standard linear solid are discussedin detail. The expressions obtained can be used to calculate the static and quasi-static strains at depth caused by earthquakes and explosions.
